- Library Concepts are introduced in grades 5K - 2.
- Library Skills are taught to grades 3 -5 during their scheduled class period.
- Library Application opportunities are provided by the subject area teachers in grades 6 - 8.
5 year Kindergartners are allowed 1 book out at any given time.
Grades 1 - 8 are allowed 2 books out at any given time.
Books that are checked out, are always due the back the next week. There are no date due slips. The students should think of their next library day as the due date. Books may be either returned or renewed. Books can always be returned early.
Please help your children to be responsible book caretakers.
Books that become lost or damaged are often irreplaceable. Find a safe, suitable spot within the household or backpack so that books can be found easily on library day.
If a book gets damaged, please return it without mending. We have special glues, tapes, tools and procedures for book mending. Just include a note to bring it to our attention. If a book gets damaged beyond repair while it is checked out to your child, you will need to pay a replacement cost.
A book is considered lost if it has not been returned within a month of the due date. A notice will be sent stating the replacement cost, which will include a processing fee. Please pay for the book. A receipt will be issued. Should the book be found within the same school year, a refund would be given, (minus the fine amount), provided the book is not damaged.
The charge for an overdue book is 5 cents per book per school day. This excludes weekends and vacation days. There is a built-in grace period. A fine will start incurring once the book has been out an additional 5 school days.
Students can take the "guesswork" out of due dates and fines by always bringing their library books to library class. Notices of overdue books and fines will be sent home in the Tuesday Folder twice a month. Students may bring overdue books and money to the library anytime that a librarian or volunteer is present. If the library is closed, books and fines should be given to the classroom teacher. Fines should be sealed in an envelope indicating the student's name and homeroom teacher.
Students may return books even if the fine is not paid at the same time, but are encouraged to take care of fines as soon as possible in order to minimize printing costs and volunteer labor. Students must return overdue books and pay fines of 50 cents or higher before checking out more materials.

Battle of the Books is an optional reading program in which teams in grades 3-5 try to identify titles and authors of books from questions based on plots, settings and characters. Battles take place during the school day.
Any student in grades 3-5 who is interested in participating on a “Battle of the Books” team must read at least 7 books from their list by the end of Christmas vacation in order to be eligible to compete on a team. This is to insure that all team members are able to contribute to the team effort. Reading can continue throughout the “Battle” season, February-April.
